There are literally DOZENS of Turkey Trots and other Thanksgiving runs and races over the state of Virginia. Three or four years ago, I didn't pay attention. Now, I notice. The Turkey Trot that the Tidewater Striders run, each Thanksgiving, was there long before you needed gimmicks to run a race - all you needed was dedicated runners. Now you need shirts and medals and beer at the finish. Now, races need themes and costly entry fees for someone to get rich on. HOWEVER, Tidewater Striders running club is still doing it for the same reasons, as when they started:
They truly love running
They want more people to run with them
They want more people to discover how wonderful running makes them feel
They want to be able to transition, gracefully, to sports that are easier but similar to running, as they age out of the sport
They want to give generously but not foolishly to the organization that supports them
Lastly, and most importantly - most of the organization is volunteer and a great deal of the organization points to and funds scholarships for local high-school graduates.
If you are interested in running, or your child is interested in running - please consider joining and supporting a running club like Tidewater Striders - they have dozens of opportunities to run, race, train and fellowship with other like-minded people -- ALL over Hampton Roads. And this Thanksgiving, they are holding their 40th Annual Turkey Trot!
