Hampton Roads Pediatric Dentistry offers Sedation for children

Many children have a fear of the dentist. Others may not be old enough or able to understand and cooperate during a dental procedure. In these cases, Hampton Roads Pediatric Dentistry may recommend oral sedation. Below are a list of frequently asked questions about sedation. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to call one of the offices, at the end of the article.

What are the risks of dental sedation?

As with any medical or dental procedure, there are certain risks, although small, associated with dental sedation. Your child's safety is the top priority. They will review any and all risks with you in person and answer any questions you may have prior to performing any sedation technique.

Who decides whether my child needs dental sedation?

That ultimate decision will be yours, as a parent. Pediatric dentists will help you make an informed decision based on your child's dental and medical history, X-Rays and behavior. If sedation is decided, you can rest assured that your family is in good hands.

Will my insurance cover dental sedation?

While most insurances will not cover dental sedation, insurance and financial information will be discussed, at your appointment.

How do I care for my child after sedation?

After your child is sedated, he or she will be drowsy and will likely want to sleep. If this is the case, place them on their side with their chin up. Wake your child every hour and encourage them to drink to prevent dehydration. Watch your child carefully to be sure they do not injure themselves. The care instructions will be discussed, during your child's appointment.
